Thankfully, we have only had light snow in the Springfield area this year. To avoid injuries when shoveling snow use the following tips:

1. Stretch first. Shoveling can be moderate exercise especially when it accumulates. You want to prepare your body for this workout.

2. Maintain proper posture. Use your leg muscles as much as possible. You want to use a squatting motion like when you’re lifting boxes.  Keep your back upright to avoid strain. Use your shoulders. Hold your shovel close and don’t twist your torso.

3. Clean cars first. You don’t want to create double work so working on the vehicles first is more efficient.

4. Wear layers. You can always remove layers if you overheat.

5. Drink plenty of water. You also want to remain hydrated during this workout.

6. Stretch when you’re finished. Yay! You’re done shoveling so you can return inside to relax.
