If you were to reflect on the year 2011, what event would come up as life changing? Some may say a special experience with the family or a promotion. However, a common thread that ties the state together is the devastation Hurricane Irene caused. The damage is still present even now, but by having a positive outlook, the community can rise above the hardships and start rebuilding for the New Year.

According to The Republic, the last 12 months in New Jersey have tested the core of the state. The unpredictable weather caused devastation for many, but that doesn’t mean the citizens have given up hope. The state saw record snow, heat, and flooding, as well as a record number of disasters, such as a tornado, blizzard, and an earthquake.

“It’s been a remarkable year,” state climatologist David Robinson said. “I grew up here and I’ve been a climatologist for 20 years and I can’t recall a year with such a wide range of really extreme events.” The most destructive was Hurricane Irene, which hit the area at the end of August. While Irene caused some of the worst flooding seen in New Jersey, it also allowed for inner strength, determination, and appreciation for those who assisted in relief efforts.

“We’re very fortunate to have strong emergency management agencies and strong volunteer agencies,” said Mary Goepfert, a spokeswoman for the state Office of Emergency Management. “But we also had the cooperation of the public during the largest evacuation ever in this state. The governor made strong comments and people complied, and that made all the difference.”

Rising global temperatures may play a role in the dramatic climatic shifts, Robinson said. 2011 already qualifies as the wettest on record, and is expected to finish as the warmest as well. “Sometimes the atmosphere tends toward extreme patterns…the warmth is part of an ongoing upward trend of temperatures. As the atmosphere is warmer, it can hold more moisture, so there may be some linkage between us getting warmer and us getting wetter.”
