“My town never floods. I don’t need flood insurance.”

Stranger things have happened. It is better to be prepared for a flood that could never happen than to have major flood destroy your property leaving you with major maintenance or reconstruction bills.

Here are some tips from FEMA on how to protect your belongings BEFORE, DURING & AFTER a flood

BEFORE

  • Move any personal items out of your basement such as clothing.

Flood insurance only covers items normally found in a basement, such as a furnace or washer and dryer. Personal items are not covered.

  • Start keeping a list of all your important household/business purchases.

This list can help you greatly if you purchased contents coverage.

Your list should include:

  • Date and place of purchase
  • Model number
  • Serial number (for large appliances)
  • Descriptions
  • Original purchase costs (with receipts, if possible)
  • Photos or video of your home’s interiors and your personal property
  • Call your insurance agent or company and discuss requirements for reporting a flood claim.
    • Also, provide them with an emergency contact (address & phone number) in case your home becomes inhabitable and you need to leave.

DURING

If there is time, turn off your electricity at your breaker or fuse box and close the main gas valve.

AFTER

If you hear hissing or smell gas, leave immediately and call the gas company. Using your home phone or cell phone inside the house could spark an explosion.
